This program is a sub specialist Fellowship Program for qualified Orthopaedic Surgeons wishing to extend their expertise in shoulder and knee surgery. It is open to all applicants, overseas and local alike. The applicant is chosen on his merits and also is chosen on his ambition to pursue practice in areas of the sub specialities mentioned rather than general orthopaedics. Because of the highly specific nature of this clinic we do not regard this fellowship program as suitable for Orthopaedic Surgeons wanting to go into practice as general Orthopaedic Surgeons, rather it is considered as a training centre in cutting edge techniques of knee and shoulder surgery.
The training period of the Fellowship within this clinic is a structured six month program. Each fellowship begins either on 1st February or 1st August each year. It includes supervised consulting with patients including exposure to new patients and to post surgical patients and it includes a variety of exposure to surgery including assisting and supervised operating. Within this clinic there is no opportunity for consulting without supervision or operating without supervision and we do not anticipate that the Fellow would be required to write out prescriptions and he will not be required to write out investigation forms for pathology, radiology and the like.
The Fellow is required to work with the fellowship supervisor for 90% of his time. A further 10% is allocated to research where both clinical and primary research is done in an attempt to publish and add to the world literature. This activity also acts as an opportunity to provide peer review of patients that are treated within this organization.
The fellowship program has now been running over 15 years and with great success and we currently have applicants through to 2011. All applicants are expected to return to their country of origin once their Fellowship is completed.
There are four fellowships available within our group.
- Dr Keith Holt and Dr Greg Witherow
- Dr Greg Witherow and Dr Greg Janes (in conjunction with Smith -Nephew)
